How To Plan For Rain on Your Wedding Day

Hello, lovely couples!

As your wedding planner, I know how important it is to create the perfect day filled with love, joy, and unforgettable moments. While we all dream of clear skies and sunshine, it’s essential to have a solid rain plan in place just in case Mother Nature has other ideas. This past season was the wettest season Seattle has had! Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you develop a rain plan that ensures your day remains magical, no matter the weather!

  1. Have a Backup Plan THOUGHT OUT In ADVANCE

The first step in your rain plan is brainstorming ideas for your ceremony and reception. Whether your venue offers an indoor option or if a tent will need to be rented. Ensure that this space aligns with your wedding theme and guest capacity. Rain plans we had to use this past season –

  1. @Chatea Lill, we had to move the outdoor ceremony into the fireplace room and during dinner (which was still able to take place under the tent) slip the ceremony space to get ready for dancing after dinner.
  2. We had to tent the entire reception space for an August wedding at a private residence and get heaters! Luckily, the rain stopped in time for the ceremony but having the cover for reception was key.
  3. @The Center of Urban Horticulture, we had to move the reception into their classroom hall from The Grove. The couple embraced their ceremony to be held outside, clear umbrellas saved the day!
  1. Create a Timeline for Weather Contingencies

Having a flexible timeline is crucial. Consider the following:

  • Ceremony: Decide in advance if you’ll move indoors at the first sign of rain or wait until the last minute. Communicate this plan with your venue and vendors.
  • Cocktail Hour: Plan for an indoor cocktail hour to keep guests entertained while you take any necessary indoor photos.
  • Reception: Ensure your reception can seamlessly transition to the backup space without causing delays.
  1. Communicate with Your Vendors

Make sure your vendors are aware of your rain plan. This includes your photographer, florist, and catering team. Discuss potential adjustments, such as changing outdoor decor to suit an indoor setting. Good communication ensures everyone is prepared and can adapt to the situation smoothly. This is a great reason to hire us as your planner so we can take over this communication for you!

  1. Inform Your Guests

Consider including a note about your rain plan on your wedding website or in your invitations. Letting guests know that you have a backup plan in place will help ease any concerns they might have about the weather. You can also send a quick update via text or email if rain is in the forecast as the big day approaches.

  1. Consider Fun Rainy Day Activities

If the weather does turn, embrace it with some fun ideas! Here are a few options:

  • Photo Booth: Set up a cozy indoor photo booth with fun props that match your theme.
  • Games: If space allows, consider adding some indoor games for guests to enjoy during cocktail hour.
  • Signature Drinks: Create a signature cocktail to lift spirits and keep everyone cheerful!
  1. Plan for Outdoor Moments

If the rain isn’t too heavy, you might still want to venture outside for some unique photo opportunities. Consider:

  • Clear Umbrellas: These are stylish and allow you to take beautiful photos without getting soaked.
  • Rainy Day Vibes: Embrace the weather with fun poses—think playful splashes or snuggles under a shared umbrella.

  1. Stay Positive and Flexible

Remember, the most important part of your wedding day is the love you share. A little rain can lead to beautiful memories and stunning photos! Keep a positive attitude and trust your planning. Your guests will follow your lead and enjoy the day, no matter the weather.

What Does Rain On Your Wedding Day Mean?

While it may not be what you pictured for your perfect wedding, many people believe rain on your wedding day is good luck and a sign that your marriage will last.  Hindu tradition notes that a knot that becomes wet is hard to untie; thus, when you “tie the knot” on a rainy day, it is said that your marriage will not come undone easily!

Rain also signifies cleansing and renewal, signifying the beginning of your new life with your partner.  Embrace the beauty of a fresh start for your married life with a nourishing rain!
